THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST

Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:15-17

“He is the image of the invisible God, the first born of all creation. For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:15-17)

Paul prayed that his readers would be filled with the real and deep knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding (v. 9). Beginning in verse 15 of this first chapter of Colossians, we read a litany of amazing truths about Jesus Christ that are probably the most concentrated descriptions of the glories of Christ in the New Testament.

Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God. He is God who came to this earth in human form. All the attributes of God belong to Jesus Christ. He is the first born of all creation. Paul had in mind the rights and privileges of the first born son, especially the son of a king, who would inherit ruling sovereignty. Jesus is the rightful heir to all the Father has, including His rule and authority over all things.

Then we see that Christ was involved in creation; in fact, He was the agent of creation — “For by Him all things were created.” This includes the angels as suggested by the Jewish terms for the various ranking of angelic beings — “whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.” All things were created by Him.

“All things were created through Him and for Him.” They were created for the honor and glory of Jesus Christ. All of creation is His; it was created for Him. “And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Christ continually sustains His creation. He holds all things together.

We must never underestimate the supremacy of Jesus Christ. He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. He holds all things together in His sovereign hands and rules as King over all His creation. What comfort this ought to give to us! It also reminds us that we were created to live for Him and for His glory.

Lord Jesus, You are the Creator and Sustainer of all things. It is so comforting to know that You hold all things together in Your sovereign hands. I acknowledge Your supremacy over all things and I realize that I was created to live for You. Give me the desire and power to do so this day.
