Scripture Reading: Colossians 2:1-5
“That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:2,3)
Jesus Christ is a treasure chest full of wisdom and knowledge. He is our treasure and we should value Him greatly. And as we get to know Him better and better, we will discover wisdom and knowledge that will enable us to face the vicissitudes of life. Every time I read the Scriptures, I find new insights about Jesus Christ and I find help and strength to face the opportunities and challenges before me.
Paul said that the supreme mystery is “Christ in us, the hope of glory” (1:27). Christ is the treasure who lives in us — “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us” (II Corinthians 4:7). We are called to explore this treasure so that we may “reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ.”
We need to spend time alone searching out this treasure; but we also need community so that “our hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love.” Such community enables us to find the riches of Christ that we have together. We are able to help one another discover the treasures of wisdom and knowledge that are found in Jesus Christ.
It is important that we pursue the wisdom and knowledge found in Christ so that no one may delude us with seemingly plausible arguments that are not in line with the truth of the gospel (v. 4). We need fellow believers to encourage us and to help us grow deeper in our faith so that we can discern error that could lead us astray from the truth.
Lord Jesus Christ, You are my treasure. When I spend time with You, I find the wisdom that I need to face the challenges and opportunities that You bring into my life. When I spend time with fellow believers, I am encouraged to grow deeper in my understanding of the gospel. Today may I be taken by You, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
