Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:5-11
“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” (Colossians 3:5)
We are in a section of the epistle to the Colossians that deals with the practical application of the gospel. Perhaps one of the most difficult things for us to learn is to not only know the gospel intellectually, but that we also are able to apply it to our daily living. The gospel has implications for everything we do. We must be rooted and grounded in our faith — “Having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith” (2:7). As we mature in our faith, we will learn how to apply the gospel to every aspect of our lives.
Read the first four verses of this chapter again. They lay the foundation for gospel application. We are told that we have been resurrected with Christ (3:1). We are now new creatures in Him. We have a new ability and new desires. We are also told that we are to keep seeking the things above, not the things that are on earth (3:2). We are to be preoccupied with Christ and thus we are to seek Him first in our lives. We are reminded that our lives are hidden in Christ (3:3). We are secure in Him because He has loved us and accepted us. Now we no longer live but He lives in us. And finally we are reminded of our eternal destiny — “When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” (3:4). We are destined for glory!
Because of these things we must now work out our salvation. Working out salvation means learning how to apply the gospel to all the areas of our lives. This includes putting certain things to death (3:5-7), putting sinful attitudes away (3:8), and putting on the new self that we have in Christ (3:9,10).
We can never do these things in our own strength, no matter how hard we try. But remember, we have Christ living in us. He will enable us to act on these things.
Lord Jesus, I pray that I will be able to work out my salvation today as I seek to apply the gospel to everything I do. I am thankful that I have Your power and presence to enable me to put off my old self and to put on the new self that is mine by Your grace.
