THE POWER FOR CHANGE

Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:12-17

“Put on then as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience.” (Colossians 3:12)

Paul is continuing to work out the pattern of renewal. This pattern involves putting off the old self along with its practices — “sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (v. 5). But we can never be successful in putting off these things without putting something in their place — “seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices, and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of the creator” (vs. 9,10).

We are now being instructed what we are to put on in verse 13. But notice first what we are told about ourselves — we are “God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved.” When we understand our identity in Christ, we have a new power to make changes in our lives. We are God’s chosen ones! He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). He has made us his precious possessions — “I have called you by name, you are Mine” (Isaiah 43:1).

God Himself has made us holy through the work of His Son Jesus — “He has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him” (1:22). Since God has made us holy, He calls us to live out that holiness and He gives us the power to do so.

And we are God’s beloved! Yes, we are loved by the Creator God of this universe. His love for us is an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). His love for us is so great that He sent His one and only Son to die in our place. Jesus voluntarily came to accomplish salvation for His people because His love for us is beyond comprehension (Ephesians 3:19). Take time to reflect upon His love for you. Grasp the extent of it and give thanks to Him for it.

It is our identity in Christ that gives us motivation and power for change. We have Christ living in us (Galatians 2:20). Because of this we are to put on Him and His attributes — “compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience.”

Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I cannot put on the things You have called me to put on without Your presence and power in my life. Thank You that I am one of Your chosen ones, holy and beloved. Because of this, enable me to put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience this day.
