Scripture Reading: I Samuel 9-11

“Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.” (I Samuel 10:6)

Chapters 9 through 11 record the events of Saul being identified as God’s choice for king and of Saul’s being anointed as king of Israel. All through these chapters we see God’s providential hand at work.

There is an interesting phrase that is found twice in these chapters — “The Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you” (10:6) and “The Spirit of God rushed upon Saul” (11:6). We know that people during the Old Testament period did not have the Spirit of the Lord permanently indwelling them. The Spirit would come and go at His good pleasure. God would send His Spirit to equip and empower people to do His will and accomplish specific tasks. This was the case with Saul. God’s Spirit rushed upon him so that he could do what God wanted him to do.

But God made a specific prophecy through Joel that one day He would pour out His Spirit on His people — “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh” (Joel 2:28). This prophecy was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost — “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house…And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:1-2, 4a).

From that time forward all believers are blessed with the presence of the Spirit at all times. Once God has brought His salvation upon us through Jesus Christ, the Spirit sets up His abode in us — “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?” (I Corinthians 6:19). How grateful we should be that we have the permanent indwelling of God’s Spirit. He does not come and go; He lives in us. And what comfort it gives us to know that we are never alone. We have the Spirit of God with us every moment of every day. He convicts us, empowers us, teaches us, and illuminates us so that we can grasp the great truths of the Word of God.

Spirit of the living God, I am so grateful for Your continual presence in my life. I know that I am never alone. I acknowledge Your presence within me and I pray that I will yield myself to Your direction, conviction, and guidance this day. O Spirit, melt me, mold me, fill me, use me!
