Scripture Reading: I Samuel 18:12-16

“And David had success in all his undertakings for the Lord was with him. And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.” (I Samuel 18:14-16)

David was a successful leader. What was the key to his success? The answer is found in this passage — “And David had success in all his undertakings FOR THE LORD WAS WITH HIM.” It was God’s presence and blessing upon David’s life that made him successful. David was very aware of the Lord’s presence in his life. Read the Psalms of David and you will realize how David was acutely aware that God was with him and that he trusted the Lord for success.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to Him” (Psalm 28:7).

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

“Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, and He will act” (Psalm 37:5).

“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in His way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand” (Psalm 37:23,24)

David knew that the Lord was with him and he trusted the Lord to give him success. He knew that the Lord was his strength and shield, and he knew that the Lord was near when he went through times of danger and despair. David acknowledged that his steps were being directed by the Lord and he believed the Lord would guide and protect him.

The key to success is to know that the Lord is with us and to trust Him fully in all our undertakings. He will give us the victory. We have to learn to practice the Lord’s presence in our lives. Take time right now to acknowledge His presence and to thank Him for it.

Lord God, I know that You are with me. You promised to never leave nor forsake me. Like David, my heart exults in You and I give You thanks for Your presence and blessings upon my life. I know that You hold my hand and direct my steps. Indeed, I praise You and thank You for Your presence.
