Scripture Reading: I Thessalonians 5:12-22
“And we urge you, brothers, warn those how are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.” (I Thessalonians 5:14,15)
It is tempting to rush through these final admonitions in this letter to the Thessalonians, but we should not. These instructions are in Scripture for a reason. When we become Christians, we become part of the body of Christ. God desires for us to be actively involved in a local church. It is in Christian community that we will grow the most spiritually. We need one another and we need to encourage one another in our spiritual walks.
It is in Christian community that we will learn together how to work out the implications of the gospel. We have a responsibility to engage with other believers for our good and for theirs. When we see one of our brothers or sisters doing something harmful, we are to point it out in love. We are called to encourage each other by coming alongside those who are timid and we are to encourage them by reminding them of God’s promises. We are to support those who are weak, both spiritually and physically. We are to be patient with everyone and we are to be kind to one another.
The gospel gives us the power to do these things. We have Christ living in us. He will enable us to have wisdom and patience and kindness. He will give us grace to love others. God is honored when we do these things. Think of someone you can encourage today.
Lord Jesus, today let me be an encourager. Enable me to be patient and kind with others. Let me come alongside those who need help or who are weak, and may I be a blessing to them.
