Scripture Reading: I Thessalonians 5:12-22

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (I Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Prayer brings us into intimate fellowship with God. Prayer is crawling up in to the heart of God. It is talking to Him and listening to Him. It is telling Him how much we cherish Him and delight in Him. It is in prayer that we are able to tell God the desires of our hearts. When we pray, we come into His presence and it is there that He will fill us with joy.

I love the words of Fanny Crosby’s hymn, “Draw Me Nearer” — “O the pure delight of a single hour that before Thy throne I spend, when I kneel in prayer and with Thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend.” There is a sweet calmness when we spend time in prayer and commune with God.

It is when we come into God’s presence and experience His joy that we can give thanks in all circumstances — “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” God loves us and He knows what is best for us. God is God; God is good; and God always knows and does what is best for His children. We can trust Him fully and we can be assured that He will give us what we need to face any trial or difficulty that comes our way. Even when we are facing things we do not understand and do not like, we can still give thanks, because we know that God is using these things in our lives for His purposes. And when we face the greatest trials, we do not have to be shaken because God is sovereign and therefore, He is in control of all things — “I have set the Lord always before Me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken” (Psalm 16:8).

Prayer is a gift from God. Prayer enables us to develop an intimate fellowship with Him, when we commune as friend with friend. God delights in our prayers. “Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.”

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of prayer. Thank You for listening to my praises, thanksgiving and requests. I know You hear my prayers and You will answer them with my best in mind. I give thanks to You for all things, for I am sure that You have your purposes for everything I face each day. I know that I can only approach Your throne of grace through my Savior Jesus. Therefore, I make this prayer in His name.
