Scripture Reading: II Thessalonians 2:1-4

“Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction.” (II Thessalonians 2:3)

Paul is correcting some misunderstandings concerning the end of times (eschatology). Some of the Thessalonians were shaken and disturbed by the teaching about the second coming of Jesus. Some believed that Jesus had already come. Evidently some false teachers were spreading incorrect information about the events surrounding the second coming of Christ.

The descriptions of the events surrounding the second coming of Jesus can be frightening. We must always remember that Jesus will come in victory but there will be troubling times before He comes. Jesus spoke of these events in Matthew 24 and 25. In Matthew 24, He made it clear that He would not come before a time of great apostasy takes place. At that time “the man of lawlessness” will be revealed.

Let’s look at what Jesus says about this time of apostasy in Matthew 24:9-13. He says that a time of tribulation will occur in which many will fall away and betray one another — “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another” (Matthew 24:9,10). From these words of Jesus, we can conclude that their will be a large scale falling away by nominal Christians. Many who are in the church will forsake the truth — “And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:11-130.

While it is frightening to think about these things, we know that God will preserve His true people. He will be with us and no one can snatch us out of His hand. This is why Jesus said ” “But the one who endure to the end will be saved.” Although the suffering may be severe, our Lord Jesus will keep us and He will carry us through the time of great tribulation. He will not let us go.

Lord Jesus, I do not know when this time of tribulation and apostasy is coming. But I know that You will keep me and not let me fall away. I am secure in Your hands and no one can snatch me out of them. Thank You for Your continual presence with me. You will defend me and protect me no matter what I have to face.
