Scripture Reading: II Thessalonians 2:13-15

“So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.” (II Thessalonians 2:15)

Our identity is rooted in our relationship with Jesus Christ. We are “beloved by the Lord.” We are loved and accepted by God. We are precious to Him and we have been chosen by Him before the foundation of the world. He set His affection on us before the world was created. We have been called through the gospel to be His own possession. Who are we? The beloved of God, chosen and called (vs. 13,14).

Because of who we are, we can and must stand firm. This is especially true during times of adversity. Jesus is our rock and salvation. We have nothing to fear for He is with us always. We are to “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might” (Ephesians 6:10). He enables us to stand firm through times of difficulty and adversity..

We are to stand firm in our battle with Satan. Christ has provided the spiritual armor for us — “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm” (Ephesians 6:13). Christ equips us to stand firm when we face the temptations the evil one throws out to us.

We are to stand firm by holding to the authoritative ‘word of God. We must cling to the teachings of the Scriptures, for they give us direction and guidance — “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work” (II Timothy 3:16).

We must remember that the Word of God is powerful — “For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

We will face many trials and temptations over the course of our lives. But we are not alone. Jesus is with us and He will enable us to stand firm and to hold to the truths found in the Scriptures.

Lord Jesus, thank You that I am never alone. You are with me always and You will give me strength to stand firm when I am faced with trials and temptations. Let me stand firm on the truths that are found in Your Word and let me live my life by those truths.
