HUMBLING OURSELVES

Scripture Reading: I Peter 5:6-11

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” (I Peter 5:6,7)

This passage has been a source of great comfort to me. As a pastor, I have shared it with many people who were going through difficult times. The passage begins with an exhortation — “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God.” None of us like what is going on now. We wish it was different; but it is not. God has allowed it for a purpose. We have to learn how to navigate through these troubling times. In order to do this, we must first humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God.

God is sovereign and He is omnipotent. He has allowed this pandemic and He can stop it when He is pleased to do so. All of us are struggling through this time of crisis. It is a major disruption for all. Quite frankly, I do not like it. However, this is where I have to humble myself and accept the fact that somehow God is using it for His glory and for our good. We have to bow before God’s mighty hand. It is God’s mighty hand that will deliver us, just as it was His mighty hand that delivered the Israelites from their bondage in Egypt — “You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm” (Deuteronomy 4:15).

We must heed to God’s call to His people — “If My people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (II Chronicles 7:14). When we humble ourselves and pray and seek God’s face in repentance, God will heal our land. We must be diligent in doing these things, and He will exalt us at the proper time. He will deliver us.

God has an eternal purpose and He is working all things according to the council of His will — “In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who WORKS ALL THINGS according to the council of His will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:11,12). We must humble ourselves and rest in the fact that God has an eternal purpose and that He is working all things according to His wise council, even this crisis we are currently experiencing!

As God’s beloved people, let us humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand and pray and seek Him in repentance. Let us thank Him for working all things out for His glory and for our good. And let us be sure that everything we do is to the praise of the glory of Christ.

Heavenly Father, I humble myself under Your mighty hand. I know that You are sovereign and that You are working all things according to the council of Your will. Forgive me for my lack of faith and the bad attitude I have had during this crisis. Forgive me for all my sins. Let me learn from this time of crisis, for I know that You are using it to teach us. Show me the things that need changing in my life and in the life of our country. Lord, I am seeking You and desire to honor You during these difficult days. Grant me patience and love. Please heal our land from this dreadful virus and may all I do bring praise to the glory of my Savior, Jesus Christ.
