Scripture Reading: John 11:17-27
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?'” (John 11:25,26)
The eleventh chapter of John is one of the most remarkable chapters in the New Testament. It describes a miracle that is not recorded in the other gospels — the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Jesus makes one of His most staggering claims — “I am the resurrection and the life.”
As we focus on the resurrection this week, we will find great comfort and hope. Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life. When He claims to be the resurrection, Jesus is referring to the final resurrection of believers when He returns again. But Jesus is saying more than that, He speaks of resurrected life now, in the present.
In the tenth chapter of John, Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10). Even in our difficulties and trials, we can have an abundant life, for we know Jesus gives us life in its abundant fullness of joy and strength. In spite of the unusual circumstances we are experiencing, we can find joy, peace and contentment when we learn to practice the presence of Jesus.
The life Jesus gives us is nothing less than the indestructible life of the resurrection, the very life of the deathless God. Because He lives we too can live. This life promised by Jesus is the eternal life of God, saving life, eternal life, the life of the Kingdom. We have this life now because Jesus lives in us.
This resurrected life, which triumphs over death, is not confined to the distant future, but it is present here and now in Him who is the resurrection. It is experiencing His love and acceptance. It is resting in Him and being assured of His continual presence. We do not have to live in defeat and in despair. We have Jesus living in us now.
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live int he body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Jesus Christ LIVES in us. We can live our lives by His life. When we get down, remember that Christ lives in us. He enables us to live life to the fullest, regardless of the circumstances, because He is the resurrection and the life.
Lord Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life. I have nothing to fear. You have given me eternal life and You enable me to have a full life now. Help me to learn to practice Your presence. Allow me to draw my strength from You. Let me rest in You when I am troubled. You love me and You gave Yourself for me. You are my all in all.
