ONE THING HAVE I ASKED

Scripture Reading: Psalm 27:1-5

“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.” (Psalm 27:4)

The Psalms are a great source of comfort to me. I often turn to them for encouragement and direction. They get my attention off the difficulties of life, because they lead me to place my focus on the Lord. David often faced fear and anxiety, for he had many days of trouble. He was honest with God when he did. Read through the Psalms and you will see how David told the Lord what he was feeling. God wants us to be honest with Him. Of course, He already knows what we are feeling, but He desires for us to cast our anxieties and burdens upon Him.

David had one great desire — to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life, so that he could gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and have fellowship with Him. David wanted to be in the Lord’s presence. He wanted to be close to the Lord. He wanted to be able to inquire of the Lord, to talk to Him. He delighted in the Lord as he contemplated the Lord’s beauty.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is beautiful. I cannot imagine what it must be like to behold Him face to face, to see His glory and His beauty. What peace it brings me when I seek after Jesus, when I come into His presence. There is a sweetness and an awe when I contemplate His glory and beauty. There is a peace and joy when I converse with the Lord, when I tell Him what is going on inside of me.

David knew the security he experienced when he was in the Lord’s presence. I know that as well when I am in the presence of Jesus. He will protect me and comfort me in my times of trouble — “For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent, He will lift me high upon a rock” (v. 5).

Jesus shelters us; He protects us and provides for us in our day of trouble. Surely we are experiencing days of trouble. I have never seen anything like these days. But Jesus is our tabernacle, He covers us under His tent. “And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us, and we have seen His glory, glory of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). What a beautiful picture — Jesus covering us with His glorious presence, concealing us from our troubles.

Today let’s focus on David’s one thing — “that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple.” When we do so, we will find shelter in our days of trouble. Jesus will conceal us under His glorious cover and He will lift us high upon a rock. For you see, He is our Rock.

Lord Jesus, I long to be in Your presence. I can only imagine how beautiful and glorious You are. When I come into Your presence, I find great peace and comfort. I know that You conceal me under Your glorious cover. I am safe and secure there. Jesus, You are full of grace and truth. I do not have to be afraid for I know that You will protect me and provide for me. You are my Rock.
