Scripture Reading: Psalm 56:1-13

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” (Psalm 56:3,4)

David faced many enemies over the course of his life — “Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me; all day long an attacker oppresses me; my enemies trample on me all day long, for many attack me proudly” (v. 1). David, the man after God’s own heart, was often afraid. He knew that God would protect him, but there were days when he was wrestled with fear.

David’s fear was intense at times — “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in Your book?” (v. 8) God knows when we toss in our sleep, when we cannot sleep because of our anxious thoughts. He knows when we cry, even when we cry inwardly and quietly. God know all our thoughts and emotions. He knows all our fears and anxieties. He remembers these things about us and He knows our weaknesses.

David knew what he needed to do when he was weak and overcome with fear — “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust.” Most of us also know what we need to do when we are faced with fear and anxiety — “I will put my trust in You.” God is trustworthy. He is sovereign, all powerful and infinitely good. When we face times of fear and anxiety, we are to put our trust in our Savior and we are to turn to His word for comfort.

As I have said many times, the Psalms are a great source of comfort to me. When I read them and meditate upon them, I find great delight and peace. God’s Word brings great comfort to us, which is why David wrote — “In God whose word I praise.” This Psalm ends with these words — “For You have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life” (v. 13). When we put our trust in our Savior Jesus, we know that He will deliver us from our troubles and enable us to walk before God in the light of life. Jesus Christ gives us His light, for He is the light of the world; and He gives us His life, for He is the very essence of life.

Lord Jesus, when I am afraid, I put my trust in You. I know that You are the sovereign Lord of all things and that You are all powerful and infinitely good. You know my anxious thoughts. You know when I toss in my sleep and cry inwardly and outwardly. You will deliver me from my troubles and fears. When I trust You, I will not be afraid and I will be able to walk in Your light and life. It is then that I will find perfect peace and indescribably joy.
