Scripture Reading: John 10:22-30
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:27,28)
This week we will focus on words of comfort from our Savior. John 10 records Jesus’ words about being our good shepherd — “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep” (John 10:11). Jesus is the Shepherd of the 23rd Psalm — “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:1-4). Jesus, our good Shepherd, gives us rest, provides for our needs, restores our souls, leads us in the way of righteousness, is with us always, even in our greatest times of distress, and comforts us.
Jesus, our good Shepherd, laid down His life for us. He loved us enough to bear the punishment we justly deserve. If He did this for us, we can be assured that He will provide for us and protect us. We are safe and secure in the palm of His hand — “And no one will snatch them out of My hand.” These words are so comforting to me. Jesus holds me tightly and He will not let me go.
Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (v. 10b). He not only provides for us and protects us, He also promises us a life of fulfillment and contentment. He is not referring to material abundance; He is talking about a deep inward sense of fulfillment. When we focus on Him, we can experience life in its fullness, regardless of the circumstances we may be facing. We live our lives in His strength. We have nothing to fear, for He is holding us close to His heart.
We are Jesus’ sheep. He laid down His life for us, so that we could have an abundant life. We are in His hands and He is holding us close to His heart. No one can snatch us from Him. His sheep hear His voice. Do you hear these words of comfort and love from your good Shepherd?
Lord Jesus, my good Shepherd, I hear Your voice. I hear Your words of comfort and love. I know that You laid down Your life for me. I know that You will provide for me and protect me. You promise me an abundant life. I shall not want. And I know that You restore my soul. I am never alone, for You are with me always, even through the valley of the shadow of death.
