Scripture Reading: John 7:37-39
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'” (John 7:37b,38)
We are getting more encouraging news these days. It seems that we are headed in a good direction. However, I do not want to forget what God has been teaching me through these days of unprecedented trial. I have realized how much I need Jesus. This trial has driven me to Him and opened my eyes to my lack of spiritual zeal. The Psalmist describes what I have been feeling during my times of anxiety and fear — “As the deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” (Psalm 42:1,2)
Jesus answers the Psalmist’s question — “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” Here is the answer — come to Jesus and drink from the river of His delights. When we are spiritually thirsty, come to Jesus and believe in Him. I am learning more and more how to trust Him. During good times, it is easy to forget how thirsty we really are. We begin to trust in ourselves more than we trust in Jesus. We become careless about developing the spiritual disciplines that help us grow in our faith. We lose our intimacy with Jesus. We easily get complacent and satisfied without Him.
During these difficult days, I have become more thirsty than ever. There have been times when I was filled with anxiety and fear. I began to long for the living water Jesus offers, which brings refreshment and satisfaction. Jesus tells us — “Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” There have been seasons in my life when I have experienced that living water. However, there have also been seasons when my spiritual life was like a drippy faucet. Jesus offers us rivers of living water. He told the woman at the well — “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty forever. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14b). Oh, how I desire this water!
Like the woman at the well, we should say to Jesus — “Sir, give me this water!” I hope we have all been thirsty during this crisis. I hope that we all realize how much we need Jesus. If you are thirsty, come and drink from the river of His delights, and springs of peace and joy will flow from your heart.
Jesus, I am so thirsty for You. Give me the water that only You can give. Let rivers of this living water flow out of my heart. Cause it to become a spring of water welling up to eternal life within me. I do believe in You. I trust You and long for You. When I drink of Your water, I find great peace and joy. My soul pants for You.
