Scripture Reading: Romans 8:5-11
“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.” (Romans 8:9)
This week our focus will be on the Holy Spirit. We may wonder why we often lack joy and peace in our lives. We question why we are weak and afraid, why we lack patience and self-control. We forget who lives in us — “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?” (I Corinthians 6:19). We have the Spirit of God living within us. When God caused us to be born again, His Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity, came to live inside of us. He set up His abode in us permanently. We are never alone!
It is clear that every true believers in Jesus Christ has the Holy Spirit living in him or her — “Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.” Whether we are conscious of it or not, we have the Spirit of God living in us. The key is to learn to practice His presence. Learning to practice the presence of the Holy Spirit will give us spiritual refreshment and power. So, how can we practice the presence of the Spirit?
First, we must start each day by reminding ourselves that we are not alone; we have the Spirit of God living in us. We have to be conscious that He is there whether we feel His presence or not. Then throughout the day, we must remind ourselves that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. He is with us wherever we go. Learning to practice His presence is crucial for us to appropriate His power, His fruit, His gifts, and His comfort. We must remember that the Holy Spirit is in us and is available to us. He is our Helper, Comforter, and Guide.
The Spirit is life-giving and life-affirming. “If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies throughout His Spirit who dwells in you” (v. 11). Through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, we can experience life in its fullness. We can find great joy and peace. We can experience comfort and assurance. We can develop self-control and patience. We can overcome fear and anxiety. All these things are possible because we have the Spirit of God living in us!
O Spirit of God, forgive me when I fail to acknowledge and to experience Your presence in my life. I know beyond any shadow of doubt that You are living in me. Enable me to practice Your presence today and every day. Produce within me rivers of living water as You have promised. Fill me with Your love, joy and peace. Make me sensitive to Your promptings and be my guide as I experience life with You today.
