THE SPIRIT OF ADOPTION

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:12-17

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'” (Romans 8:14,15)

We know that the Spirit of God dwells within us. We are never alone, for the Holy Spirit permanently indwells us. We must learn how to practice His presence. When we practice His presence, we can be led by the Spirit. The key to yield to the Spirit’s leading. We must be sensitive to the Spirit’s promptings. He brings conviction to us (John 16:8-11). He guides and directs us. He illuminates our hearts and minds to grasp the teachings of the Word of God. We must listen for His guidance (John 16:13).

“Do not quench the Spirit” (I Thessalonians 5:19). Pay attention to His voice. But remember that the Spirit will never prompt us to do anything that is contrary to the teachings of the Word of God. His leading is always consistent with the God’s revealed truth in the Word — “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak , and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you” (John 16:13,14). The Spirit glorifies Christ as He opens our eyes to God’s truth as revealed in the Bible.

The Spirit has set us free from our slavery to fear. This means that He has given us the power to resist fear. Remember — “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (II Timothy 1:7). When we are being led by the Spirit, we have freedom from fear.

Why is this? Because of our adoption into God’s family. The Spirit has enabled us to become sons and daughters of God! The Spirit brings us into an intimate relationship with our heavenly Father. He enables us to call God, “Abba! Father!” This is the most intimate and personal way we can address God. It is like calling Him, “Daddy! Daddy!” We have no reason to fear, for we are sons and daughters of the sovereign Lord of this universe. We belong to Him; we are His beloved children. He will protect us and provide for us.

The greatest assurance of our standing before God is the inward testimony of the Holy Spirit — “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit, that we are children of God” (v. 16). Gods Spirit testifies to our spirit that we are the sons and daughters of God. Listen to Him as He assures You of your salvation. You and I belong to God. We are precious to Him and deeply loved by Him. We have nothing to fear, for we are being led by the Spirit of God.

Holy Spirit, let me be sensitive to Your voice this day. I know that You are present within me and that You will lead me this day. Bring conviction when it is needed. Give me guidance and direction as I seek to be led by You. Open my eyes to the great truths of the Word of God. I have no reason to fear anything, for I have received the Spirit of adoption. I am God’s child!
