Scripture Reading: II Corinthians 5:11-21

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (II Corinthians 5:17)

What an amazing statement! “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” When we were born again by the Holy Spirit, we were changed — “The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” We are no longer to live for ourselves; we are to live for Christ who died for us and was raised. We are to be controlled by the love of Christ. Our desires, motives, thoughts, actions and attitudes change. We now can think more highly of others than we think of ourselves — “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3).

The old is gone. All our sins have been paid for. We are no longer guilty, for we have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. We can forget what is behind us and move forward in freedom to what is ahead. Our past regrets, failure, and hurts are gone; we are now new creations in Christ.

We have a new ability and new desires. We are now capable of loving and obeying our Lord, and we will desire to do so. We can devote ourselves to serving Him, and delight that we have such a privilege to do so. We can have the mind of Christ that enables us to live our lives in humility and service (Philippians 2:5-8).

We can claim the words of Isaiah 43:18,19 — “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desire, to give drink for My chosen people.” Yes, we can let go of the past because God is doing a new thing in our lives. We are new creations in Christ. God is at work in us showing us His way and refreshing us with His Spirit as we move forward in the new thing He is doing in and through us.

O Holy Spirit, You have caused me to be born again. We have made me a new creation in Christ. The old has passed away. Enable me to let go of my past failures, regrets and pain. The new has come. You have given me new desires, new abilities and new motives. May I live my life this day in light of my new identity — a new creation in Christ.
