Scripture Reading: Psalm 34:1-7
“I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears…The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them.” (Psalm 34:4,7)
David began this Psalm with praise — “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (v. 1). David had experienced a personal encounter with God. He had been delivered by God from his enemies. Thus David invited all to join him in praise — “Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together” (v. 3). David was saying, “I have reason to praise the Lord; join with me!”
David then shared his experience with the Lord — “I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears” (v. 4). It is so comforting to me to know that God hears our prayers and in His time He answers them. Sometimes we may have to wait for the answer; but we can be assured that when we seek the Lord, He hears and sees us. God will never turn a deaf ear to us when we cry out to Him.
God had delivered David from all his fears. The particular Hebrew word translated “fears” does not refer to the reverential fear that believers have for God. Instead, it is a word that means terrors, terrible fears of circumstances. David went on to write — “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles” (v. 6). David knew how desperate he was. He was in a dreadful state when he cried out to the Lord. The Lord heard and saved him out of all his troubles.
Do you see it? When we are overcome with fears and troubles, the first thing we need to do is to seek the Lord, to cry out to Him. We have to be honest with Him. We are all poor and needy people who desperately need the Lord. We can be assured of His love and of His protection. He hears our cries for help. He comes to us in our fears.
When we look to Him in faith, our attitudes change. “Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed” (v. 5). “Radiant” is a word used in Isaiah 60:5 to describe a mother’s face lighting up when she sees her children. Our fears turn into delight when we gaze upon the beauty of the Lord.
Then we come to the most comforting part of the passage — “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them” (v. 7). The angel of the Lord is none other than a reincarnate manifestation of Jesus Christ. He encamps around us and He fights for us. Ultimately He is the one who will deliver us from all our fears and all our troubles.
Lord Jesus, I have nothing to fear for You are with me. You come to me in my fears and troubles. You hear me when I cry out for heap. You answer my prayers and You deliver me. When I reflect upon You and Your beauty, my heart is filled with joy and peace. I know that You encamp around me and protect me. I know that You love me and care for me.
