Scripture Reading: Psalm 34:8-10

“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” (Psalm 34:8)

From personal experience I have learned that God is God and God is good and God wants His best for His children. God is God. He is sovereign over all things. He rules and over-rules. God is good. All that God does is good, for God in His very essence is good. “The goodness of God refers to the perfection of His nature: ‘God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all’ (I John 1:5)” (A.W. Pink, The Attributes of God).

Thomas Manton wrote — “He is essentially good, not only good, but goodness itself…He is eternally and immutably good, for He cannot be less good than He is; as there can be no addition made to Him, so no subtraction from Him.” To put it simply, God is the highest good. He is good in every way and in everything He does.

All that comes from God is good. After He created all things, He said, “It is good.” Any goodness we have comes from Him. All that He does is good. The greatest expression of His goodness was seen when He sent His Son to redeem sinful people like us. Our salvation is the product of the goodness of God. Because God is good, He wants His best for us.

Thus, the Psalmist invites us — “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.” Reflect upon all the good things God has done for you. Taste His goodness; see His goodness all around you. “The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord” (Psalm 33:5). Claim His good promise to you — “Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints, for those who fear Him have no lack” (v. 9).

“O that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men” (Psalm 107:8). Gratitude is the proper response to the goodness of God. Take time to thank Him for all the good things He has done for you. Take refuge in Him and you will be blessed — “Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.”

Lord, You are God; You are good; and You want Your best for me. I have tasted Your goodness throughout my life. Thank You for all the good things You have done for me and in me. Most of all thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem me from my sin and guilt. He is the greatest expression of Your good.
