Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:27-30
“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.” (Philippians 1:27)
How we live our lives matters to God. Every day we are to let our manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In other words, we are to live gospel-centered lives, following the example of our Lord Jesus. Some years ago people wore bracelets that had WWJD written on them. The letters WWJD meant “What Would Jesus Do?” The idea was that the letters on the bracelet reminded the one who wore it to live his or her life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. What would Jesus do? How would He respond? How would He treat others?
The gospel humbles us. It shows us our unworthiness. To live in a manner worthy of the gospel means that we live our lives in humility. We do not deserve anything good from the Lord because we are sinners, fallen people, who have failed God and others. There is no place for pride in our lives. We must be broken over our sins. When we see ourselves this way, we will be gracious with other people, just as God has been gracious with us.
The gospel also comforts us and gives us great value. In spite of our failures, we are loved by God. He has chosen us to be His own. He has made us part of His family. This is why we are told in this passage to stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel. We need each other to live our lives in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Living a life worthy of the gospel requires community, fellowship with other believers, who will encourage us, admonish us, and hold us accountable for our spiritual growth.
What does it mean to let our manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ? It means a living my life with humility, following the example of our Lord Jesus. It means living a life of service, for we are called to be God’s servants, who seek to serve others in His name. It means a life of love, loving God and loving our neighbors. It means a life of praise, praising our Savior and glorifying Him in all that we do.
Lord Jesus Christ, I desire to let my manner of life be worthy of Your gospel. I cannot do this in my own strength. I need You to empower me to do it. Let me live my life this day in humility, service and love. Let me glorify You in all that I do.
