Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:5-11

“Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)

We have been looking at the atoning work of Jesus Christ. In particular we have seen how Jesus humbled Himself by taking on human nature and becoming a bond slave. And we saw the ultimate expression of the humiliation of Christ — “And being found in the appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedience to death — even death on a cross” (v. 8).

God the Father highly exalted His Son and honored Him for the work He did to accomplish salvation for His people. Jesus was exalted to the highest place — “which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realm, far above rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the age to come” (Ephesians 1:20,21).

The Father not only exalted His Son to the highest place, He also give Him the name above every name — Jesus, Lord of all. Jesus Christ is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. The day is coming when every knee will bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth. And every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. All creation will bow before the lordship of Jesus Christ.

As we reflect upon the work Jesus accomplished on our behalf, our hearts should be filled with gratitude and wonder. After His humiliation, the Father exalted Him above all things. He deserves our praise and worship. We are to bow before Him and confess — “Jesus Christ is our LORD!”

Lord Jesus Christ, I bow before Your majesty and authority. You are the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords. You occupy the greatest seat of honor in all the universe. You are seated at the right hand of God. I praise You and worship You. The day is coming when every knee will bow and tongue confess that you are Lord of all.
