Scripture Reading: John 14:1-7; 17:24
“Father, I desire that they also whom You have given Me, may be with Me where I am, to see My glory that You have given Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:24)
Jesus made an incredible promise to us — “In My Father’s house are many rooms. If It were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take You to Myself, that where I am you may be also” (14:2,3). Jesus has prepared a place for us in eternity through His suffering, death and resurrection. He will come to us at our death and take us to the place where He is in glory.
When Jesus completed the Upper Room Discourse, He prayed a prayer, which we call the High Priestly Prayer. I want to look ahead at one petition in His prayer — “Father, I desire that they whom You have given Me, may be with Me where I am, to see My glory that You have given Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world” (17:24). Jesus made a promise to us that He confirmed by a prayer to His Father. He desires for us to be with Him throughout eternity. He purchased us with His blood and we are precious to Him. He wants us to be in His presence.
But notice what else Jesus desires for us. He wants us to see His glory. I cannot imagine what His glory must be like. Moses longed to see it — “Please show me Your glory” (Exodus 33:18). However, God knew Moses could not handle it and therefore He hid Moses in the cleft of a rock and covered Him with His hand. Moses could only get a glimpse of God’s glory.
Paul wrote about His glory — “For I consider the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us” (Romans 8:18). He is referring the the glory of Christ. We are told that if we take all the sufferings of this present time it pales to nothing compared to what we will see one day when we behold the glory of Christ.
Jesus Christ prayed to His Father that we would be with Him where He is so that we could see His glory. One day we will see it face to face. I cannot wait!
Lord Jesus, like Moses I long to see Your glory. I know that I could not handle it now but one day I will be with You where You are and I will see Your glory. Help me to remember this especially during times of suffering and difficulty. Enable me to keep an eternal perspective as I await the day when I will be with You and behold Your glory.
