THE VINE AND THE BRANCHES

Scripture Reading: John 15:1-8

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4,5)

The gospel message reminds us of our utter dependence upon Jesus. We are lost and helpless without Him. He saves us and He sustains us. He gives us strength to endure life on this earth. He nourishes us and enables us to bear spiritual fruit. We live and breath and have our being in Him. Apart from Him we can do nothing.

The picture of the vine and the branches illustrates our dependency upon Jesus. We must abide in Christ in order to gain His strength, wisdom, peace, joy and endurance. To abide in Jesus means to continue in a moment by moment relationship with Him. It means that we trust Him for everything and recognize His presence in our lives.

We must remember that Jesus abides in us — “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but CHRIST LIVES IN ME. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). We have the ability to live our lives by the power of His life. Christ is always with us. We have to learn how to appropriate His presence and draw strength and wisdom from Him. We must learn how to yield our will to His will.

Abiding in Christ means that we are conscious of His presence within us. It means that we trust Him no matter what. Apart from Him we can do nothing. But with Him we can do all things — “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:12,13).

Jesus, You are the vine and I am a branch that utterly depends upon You to give me life, strength, nourishment, endurance, and wisdom. I know that apart from You I can do nothing; but by Your strength I can do all things. Enable me to bear fruit this day that brings glory to You.
