Scripture Reading: John 15:12-17
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing, but I have called you friends, for all that I heard from the Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:13-15)
It is amazing to think that we are friends with the Lord of the universe. Jesus clearly tells us that we are His friends — “You are My friends.” “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17). Our friend Jesus never wavers in His love for us. He reminds us of the extent of His love — “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.” Jesus gave up everything for us, including His life. He loves us with a sacrificial, unconditional and unending love.
“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). Jesus is our Friend who sticks close to us no matter what. He is with us in good times and in difficult times. He doesn’t give up on us, even when we fail Him. He will never leave nor forsake us.
It is remarkable that Jesus says, — “No longer do I call you servants…but I have called you friends.” Of course, we are His servants; but He also views us as His friends. Abraham was called “the friend of God” (James 2:23; II Chronicles 20:7; Isaiah 41:8). We are called “friends of Jesus.” Cherish His friendship and remember that He delights in our relationship with Him also. Let us rekindle our love for the best friend we could possibly have.
Lord Jesus, I am so thankful that You have called me Your friend. You have shown me the extent of Your love in that You laid down Your life for me. I know that You will always stick close to me no matter what. Thank You that You are willing to befriend a sinner like me.
