Scripture Reading: John 15:12-17

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He may give it to you.” (John 15:16)

When we get down on ourselves, we must remember that we have been chosen by God to be His beloved people — “Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will” (Ephesians 1:4,5). In the Upper Room Discourse, Jesus reminds us that we have been chosen by Him — “You did not choose Me, but I chose you.”

Left in our sinful state, we would have never chosen Jesus. We were separated from Him by our sin and were by nature children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3). But God acted; He chose us and sent His Son Jesus to accomplish salvation for us. As a result we belong to Him — “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price” (I Corinthians 6:19,20).

We must remember who we are — “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy” (I Peter 2:9,10).

Jesus chose us and appointed us to bear fruit. As we abide in Him and are filled with His Spirit, we will bear spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22,23). We will also bear the fruit of godly character, becoming more like Jesus as we grow spiritually. And we will bear fruit when we witness to others — by proclaiming “the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Lord Jesus, thank You for choosing me. I am unworthy to be one of Your children. But You bought me with Your precious blood and I am not my own, I belong to You. And You have appointed me to bear much fruit. I know that I can bear fruit only when I am abiding in You. Enable me this day to be in close fellowship with You.
