Scripture Reading: John 16:12-15
“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:13,14)
Jesus continued to inform His disciples about the work of the Holy Spirit. He said — “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.” We must remember that without the enlightening of the Holy Spirit, we cannot understand the things of God — “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (I Corinthians 2:14). Until we are regenerated (born again) by the Spirit, we are dead to spiritual things (Ephesians 2:1). The Spirit opens the eyes of our hearts and enables us to understand God’s truth.
We must also remember that the Holy Spirit is the author of Scripture — “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that he man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (II Timothy 3:16).
The Holy Spirit superintended the human writers of the Bible by breathing into them the words God intended for them to write. “Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (II Peter 1:20,21). The inspiration of Scripture is what gives the Bible its authority.
The Holy Spirit is the author of Scripture and He also illuminates us to understand it. This is what Jesus meant when He said — “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.” Thus, when we read and meditate upon the Scriptures, we must depend upon the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit, which always brings glory to Christ — “He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you.”
O Spirit of Truth, thank You for Your Word as recorded in the Bible. Thank You for opening my eyes to God’s truth and for illuminating my heart to grasp the meaning of the Scriptures. You enable me to glorify Christ by reading and meditating upon Your word and putting it into practice. Apart from You, O Spirit of Truth, I could not understand the things of God.
