Scripture Reading: John 16:25-33
“I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Surely all of us can relate to these words of Jesus — “In the world you will have tribulation.” Life on this earth is filled with times of trouble, disappointments, pain and suffering. When sin entered into the story of humankind, it brought with it tragedies, despair and death. This is a broken and fallen world. We should expect trouble.
However, we do not have to be overcome by the troubles we face, for Jesus has overcome the world. He will give us the victory. In fact, He tells us that we can have His peace even in the midst of tribulation. When we are facing troubles, we can experience a deep inward sense of peace because the Prince of Peace is always with us. This is why Jesus tells us to “take heart.”
The key to finding peace during times of difficulty is our focus. We can focus on our troubles and be driven to despair; or we can focus on our Savior and experience His peace. “Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the same, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such hostility against Himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted” (Hebrews 12:2,3). Look at Jesus and take heart!
When difficulties come, we can face them with confidence in our Savior. Look at what He suffered, and be reminded that He sympathizes with us. He is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. He has already overcome the world and He will make us more than conquerors. We have nothing to fear for Jesus is with us. He will give us the strength to endure and fill us with His peace in the midst of our troubles. Take heart!
Lord Jesus, thank You for being with me through the difficulties, pain and disappointments that I have experienced in my life. I know that I am never alone in them. You are always there. Help me to keep my eyes on You and not be become overwhelmed by my troubles. Let me take heart, for You have overcome the world.
