Scripture Reading: Psalm 33:6-9

“By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host…Let all the earth fear the Lord, let all the in habitants of the world stand in awe of Him! For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.” (Psalm 33:6,7-8)

We cannot grasp how powerful God is. He is omnipotent, which means He is all powerful. Nothing is more powerful than our Creator God. The Psalmist reminds us God created all things out of nothing. He simply spoke and what He spoke came into being.

Go back and read the creation account in Genesis 1 and 2. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Then read how God did it — “And God said, ‘Let there be light, and there was light'” (Genesis 1:3). On each of the days of creation, we read these words, “And God said…” God spoke and what He spoke came to be — “For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.”

The very power of God that brought creation into existence is the same power with which He controls and sustains all things. Colossians attributes the work of creation to Jesus — “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:16,17).

When we consider God’s power, the Psalmist tells us what our response should be — “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him!” Yes, when we consider the power of our Creator God, we should have great respect for Him and we should stand in awe of Him.

Look around today. Observe all that God has created. Then remember how it came into being — “For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.” Let us stand in awe of the One who created all things.

Lord Jesus, Creator and Sustainer of all things, I stand in awe of Your power. All things were created by You and for You. By Your power You sustain all things. Thank You for all You have done and continue to do. I have nothing to fear for You will hold me and sustain me by the very same power that You had when You created all things.
