Scripture Reading: Psalm 33:10-17

“The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations.” (Psalm 33:11)

The God who created this universe governs it according to His sovereign will. Because God is omniscient (all wise), His will is perfect in every way. God fully knows the past, the present and the future He knows what is best and He wills what is best. His will cannot be changed by any other creature — “The will of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations.”

God is not only omniscient (all wise), He is also omnipotent (all powerful). Thus God is able to accomplish His will fully, for nothing can thwart it. Through His power God works all things according to His perfect will — “In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works ALL THINGS according to the COUNSEL OF HIS WILL” (Ephesians 1:11). This should give us great comfort. God works ALL THINGS according to His perfect will.

God has willed a plan for each of our lives. When the Jewish people were being held in captivity, God made a promise to them — “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). This promise is for all of God’s children. He has a plan for each of our lives. And God will ensure that His plans for us will come to completion.

We must seek to understand what God’s will is — “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17).

How do we discover the will of God? First and foremost, we find His will in the Scriptures. The Bible is a revelation of God Himself and of His will for us. We cannot find the will of God without reading and meditating upon His Word. The more we do so, the more we will discover God’s will.

Second, we must learn to be sensitive to God’s leading — “A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). We develop plans based on the knowledge we have, but God will direct our steps so that we will accomplish His will. He directs us through circumstances, godly counsel, and through the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Sovereign and all wise God, I want to know Your will. Enable me to discover it as I read Your Word and as I am sensitive to Your leading. Thank You that You have a plan for my life, one for my good, one that gives me a future and a hope. Direct my steps and enable me to complete what You have willed for my life on this earth.
