Scripture Reading: Psalm 33:12-17

“The Lord looks down from heaven; He sees the children of man; from where He sits enthroned He looks out on the inhabitants of the earth, He who fashions the hearts of them all and observes their deeds.” (Psalm 33:13,14)

What a glorious picture of the sovereignty of God is revealed in these verses. God is on His throne and He is keeping watch over all His creation. He sovereignly works in the hearts of all people. He is in control of all things. He is never taken by surprise by anything that happens, for He is the sovereign King and Lord over all things.

Our sovereign Lord rules and over-rules over all things, including earthly rulers who fail to recognize God’s authority over them. “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us burst their bonds apart and cast their cords from us.’ He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then He will speak to them in His wrath, and terrify them in His fury, saying, ‘As for Me, I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill'” (Psalm 2:2-6).

Of course, this King is none other than our Lord Jesus Christ. After His resurrection, Jesus said these words to His disciples — “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (Matthew 28:18). King Jesus rules over all things. He is the true Sovereign of the universe, for He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). The words of Isaac Watt’s hymn, Jesus Shall Reign, remind us of the response we are to have to the sovereign rule of our King.

“Jesus shall reign wherever the sun does His successive journeys run; His kingdom spread from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more.”

“Let every creature rise and bring his grateful honors to our King; angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud ‘Amen.'”

My Sovereign Lord and King, You are the supreme Ruler over all things. I am so thankful that You are in control of all things, including Your reign over all earthly rulers. And Jesus, You are my God and King. I know that You reign over my life, for You are fashioning my heart to be what You want it to be. Today I rise and bring grateful honors to You, my King.
