Scripture Reading: Psalm 33:18,19
“Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His steadfast love, that He may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine.” (Psalm 33:18,19)
The “steadfast love” of God is a translation of the Hebrew word “hesed.” This word has deep meaning which most English words can’t fully describe. The word carries the meaning of God’s covenantal faithfulness. God is faithful to keep love for those who are part of His covenant. The steadfast love of God is God’s faithful love for His covenant people. He will always be faithful to love His people, for He has entered into an eternal covenant with them.
But the word “hesed” has even deeper meaning than God’s covenantal faithfulness; it also refers to God’s redeeming love. It is God’s steadfast love that motivated the Son to become man and to be the atoning sacrifice for the sins of God’s covenant people. It is the steadfast love of God that is behind His work of salvation — “that He may deliver their soul from death.”
It is the steadfast love of God that watches over us and that provides for our every need. It is the steadfast love of God that endures forever — “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever” (I Chronicles 16:34). God’s steadfast love will never depart from us — “‘For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but My steadfast love shall not depart from you, and My covenant of peace shall not be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you” (Isaiah 54:10).
Never doubt God’s steadfast love for you. His steadfast love made our salvation possible and it is His steadfast love that will never depart from us.
Lord God, thank You for loving me with Your steadfast love. By grace You brought me into Your covenant because of Your steadfast love. You sent Your Son to redeem me out of Your steadfast love and I know that Your steadfast love will never depart from me.
