HONORABLE CONDUCT

Scripture Reading: Daniel 6:12-18

“Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king declared to Daniel, ‘May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!'” (Daniel 6:16)

Daniel had a powerful impact on this pagan king. Daniel had consistently served the king with integrity. The king had also witnessed Daniel’s faithfulness to his God. He had seen how Daniel continually served his God. The last words of the king to Daniel before he was placed in the lion’s den were — “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!”

Darius had a great respect and deep appreciation for Daniel. In fact, he was deeply disturbed when Daniel was placed in the lion’s den — “Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; no diversions were brought to him, and sleep fled from him” (v. 18). Daniel’s honorable conduct and faithful service had left a great impression on this pagan king.

Peter tells us that we have a responsibility to live honorable lives before unbelievers — “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God in the day of visitation” (I Peter 2:11,12). Unbelievers are more influenced by the way we live than by the words we say. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

The pagan king Darius saw Daniels honorable conduct. He witnessed Daniel’s faith and as a result he eventually acknowledged Daniel’s God. What kind of witnesses are we being to the unbelievers who live, work and play around us?

Lord Jesus, grant me strength to live an honorable life before the people I live among, work with, and come in contact with. May they see the out workings of my faith in You. Let my light shine before them as I seek to bear witness of Your grace and love in my life.
