WHO IS WORTHY?

Scripture Reading: Revelation 5:1-14

“Then I saw in the right hand of Him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, ‘Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?'” (Revelation 5:1,2)

The scroll in this vision represents God’s eternal plan which includes the redemption of His people and His sovereign purpose for all. The sealed scroll indicates God’s plan unrevealed and unexecuted. To open the scroll by breaking the seals means not merely to reveal what is written on the scroll, but to carry out God’s plan. Thus the right person must be found who is worthy and powerful enough to do this.

The search began with the words of a strong angel — “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” This mighty angel wasn’t worthy. In fact no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll (v. 3). John wept bitterly because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll (v. 4).

Then one of the elders gave the solution to John. “Weep no more; the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that He can open the scroll and its seals” (v. 5). Jesus Christ alone was worthy to open the scroll. He has overcome and He is able to open the scroll and the break the seven seals. He is the great King and the great Warrior who is able two break the seals and open the scroll, reveal its plan, and execute it.

In this vision Jesus Christ is pictured as a lion — “the Lion of the tribe of Judah (v. 5) and a lamb — I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain” (v. 6). As the Lamb of God, He was led to slaughter. He laid down His life for us. As the Lion of Judah, He defeated all His enemies and was rightly seated at the throne which governs the entire universe.

The vision ends with worship — “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” (v. 12). Jesus Christ, the Lion of Judah, the Root of David, the Lamb of God alone is worthy to receive such worship. Let us join with the host in heaven to say — “Worthy is the Lamb!”

Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Lion from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, the Lamb of God. You alone are worthy to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! You are sovereignly carrying out the plan of God. How comforting it is to know that You are in control of all things.
