Scripture Reading: Revelation 7:1-8

“Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the earth and sea, saying, ‘Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of God on their foreheads.” (Revelation 7:2,3)

Chapter seven is an interlude between the breaking of the sixth and seventh seals. It is a glorious chapter that lifts our hearts out of the difficult consequences of living in a fallen world. It is a comforting chapter that gives us hope and assurance of God’s promises to protect us and ultimately to deliver us from this present world.

The opening of the sixth seal brings us to the judgment at the end of the age. Chapter six ends with a question — “Who is able to stand?” The final judgment will be swift and complete, who could possibly be able to stand in it? The answer is given in chapter seven.

Before the final seal is broken and God’s judgment begins, one of the angels said — “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of God on their foreheads.” This sealing is one of the most precious things under heaven.

In Scripture, sealing has a threefold meaning. First, a seal protects against tampering. The tomb of Jesus was sealed with a guard in order to keep anyone from tampering with it. The seal was a means of protection. Second, a seal marked ownership. It identified who the real owner was. Third, a seal certifies a person’s genuine character. If a letter had the king’s seal on it, you knew it was genuine.

We, God’s servants, have been sealed by the triune God. The Father has sealed us, for we enjoy the Father’s protection throughout our lives. The Son has sealed us, for He has bought and redeemed us with His precious blood. We belong to Him — “You are not your own, for you were brought with a price” (I Corinthians 6:19,20). The Spirit seals us, for He certifies that we are the sons and daughters of God.

Because we have been sealed by God, we will be able to stand in the final judgment. When the winds of judgment blow, they will not harm us. When the final judgment comes, we are protected and we will stand in the great day of the wrath of God.

Lord God, thank You for placing Your seal upon me. I know that You will protect me because I belong to You. I will be able to stand in the final judgment because You have marked me to be Your own and have purchased me with the blood of Jesus. I have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and nothing can take that away from me.
