Scripture Reading: Revelation 20:11-15

“And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what were written in the books, according to what they had done.” (Revelation 20:12)

The enemies of Christ are dealt with in two steps. First, the spiritually wicked forces behind the world’s animosity toward Christ and His Church (represented by Satan, the beast, and the false prophet) are tormented forever and ever in the lake of fire. Second, the men and women who throughout history have opposed Christ are brought before the judgment seat of God, “the great white throne (v.11), where they stand alongside believers whom they have persecuted. Imagine the fear that those who scorned and mocked Christ and refused His offer of forgiveness must feel.

Two types of books are introduced — the books of deeds and the book of life. All the dead are to be judged according to what is found in these books. Every person is guilty and stand condemned before the judgment seat because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

But there is incredible hope! If one’s name is found in the book of life, he or she is counted as having the sinlessness and righteousness of Jesus Christ. (the effects of their justification). They are considered qualified to enter into the presence of the all holy God, into a new heaven and new earth, in which only righteousness dwells — “And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, He has now reconciled in His body by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him” (Colossians 1:21,22). Jesus alone qualifies us to enter into eternal life. However, if anyone’s name is not found in the book of life, he or she is throne into the lake of fire.

This brings the crux of your eternity down to this question — What is your relationship with Jesus Christ? Those who have put their trust in Him are those whose names are written in the book of life. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9). Where will you spend eternity?

Lord Jesus, You redeemed me with Your precious blood. You reconciled me to God and You will present me as holy and blameless and above reproach when I stand before the great white throne of God’s judgment. I know that my salvation is possible totally by grace through faith in You. I do not have to fear the judgment, for You are my Advocate who defends me before the Father. Thank You for the work You have done to make it possible for me to have my name in the book of life.
