Scripture Reading: Revelation 21:5-8
“The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be His God and he will be My son. But as for the cowardly, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:7,8)
After God revealed His plan for a new heaven and new earth (vs. 1-4), John heard God the Father affirm His promises — “And He who was seated on the throne said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ And He said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment'” (vs. 5,6).
These words are the fulfillment of the gospel invitation that God gave His people through the prophet Isaiah — “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters. And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come buy wine and milk without money and without cost” (Isaiah 55:1). God told John, “It is done!” One day we will partake from the spring of the water of eternal life.
After affirming His promises, God laid out the alternatives — intimate and eternal fellowship with God or the lake of fire. “The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be My son. But as for the cowardly, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death” (vs. 7,8)
There are only two alternatives — heaven or hell. There is no middle ground. Our eternal destiny depends upon the kind of relationship we have with Jesus Christ. He is the only way to the Father — “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Jesus’ name alone brings salvation to us — “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Where will you spend eternity? What is your destiny? It all depends upon your relationship with Jesus — “For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and He will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (7:17).
Lord Jesus, You are the Lamb of God who made my salvation possible. I acknowledge that You are the only way to the Father and that there is salvation in no other name under heaven except Yours. Thank You for making it possible for me to be a child of God. Because of Your work on my behalf, I know that I will spend eternity with You.
