Scripture Reading: Revelation 22:1-5
“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:1,2)
As we continue out guided tour through the New Jerusalem, three center pieces to the city are revealed. First, is the river of the water of life. This river symbolizes eternal and abundant life. The river flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It originates there because salvation is brought about by the sovereign will of God and was merited for us by the redemptive blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ. The water is crystal clear, because no impurities can be found in the Holy City. Remember who guides us to this water of life — “For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and He will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (7:17).
Second is the tree of life, which is found on either side of the river of the water of life. After Adam ‘s and Eve’s fall, access to the tree of life was forbidden. But in the age to come, the tree of life holds a central place in the New Jerusalem. The river and the tree symbolize provision. Everything we need will be provided to us by God. We will have free access to the tree of life.
Third is the throne of God and of the Lamb. The throne symbolizes God’s sovereignty. God and His Christ rule from this throne. We, God’s people, will have access to the throne of God and we can be assured of God’s provision, protection, and sovereign rule over the new heaven and new earth. Everything will be perfect there and we will live forever in the presence of our Savior.
Lord Jesus, my Shepherd and King, I look forward to the day when You will guide me to springs of living water in the new heaven and new earth. I will partake of the tree of life and have bold access to Your throne. I long for the day when I will live in Your presence forever and ever.
