Scripture Reading: Genesis 45:16-23
“When the report was heard in Pharaoh’s house, ‘Joseph’s brothers had come,’ it pleased Pharaoh and his servants.” (Genesis 45:16)
Joseph had revealed his true identity to his brother, and he had dealt graciously with them (45:5-15). Now we come to the text that tells us about Pharaoh’s reaction to the news that Joseph’s brothers had come to Egypt. His reaction is truly amazing. He could have had a negative reaction to the news. He could have seen these men as a threat to Joseph’s loyalty to him; but he did not. He was pleased for Joseph.
Pharaoh had a deep appreciation and respect for Joseph. He trusted Joseph fully. Pharaoh was impressed with Joseph the first time he met him. Pharaoh said of Joseph — “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God. There is none so discerning and wise as you are” (41:36,37).
What is Joseph’s life gave Pharaoh this appreciation for Joseph? Pharaoh saw Joseph’s heart-felt devotion and absolute trust in his God. Joseph’s life was a witness to the faithfulness of God. Pharaoh also knew that Joseph was a man of integrity, a man who could be fully trusted. Pharaoh noticed Joseph’s discernment and wisdom, and he knew that he was a faithful servant.
Joseph, who had experienced the grace of God in his life, knew how God wanted him to treat his brothers. Joseph demonstrated his great love for them and treated them graciously and generously. That is the way God wants us to treat others — not in bitterness, but in love.
Joseph’s life also had a profound affect on an unbelieving, pagan world leader. He had a God-centered faith that was transparent and real. He also had a consistent life that was marked by integrity and godly character.
Joseph’s life had a powerful influence on those in his family and those outside the family. He had a profound impact on many people’s lives. His was a life of irresistible grace. People were drawn to him and he was respected by them.
I wonder if people see our heart-felt devotion and absolute trust in God? Are our lives a witness to the faithfulness of God? Are we living lives of integrity? Do we seek to serve others? Are we willing to forgive those who have sinned against us? Do unbelievers see something different in us? Are we living out the gospel before the members of our family? When we do these things, we too can life a life of irresistible grace. People will be drawn to those who demonstrate godly character, both believers and unbelievers. The example we set before others is a powerful witness to God’s grace and faithfulness in our lives.
Lord God, I want to live a life of irresistible grace. I want others to see You in me. I pray that I can be Your faithful servant, one who has a consistent life marked by integrity and godly character. I cannot do this in my own strength. I can only do it when I yield to the presence and power of Christ living in me.
