Scripture Reading: Genesis 46:26-47:12
“Then Joseph prepared his chariot and went up to meet Israel his father in Goshen. He presented himself to him and fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while. Israel said to Joseph, ‘Now let me die, since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive.'” (Genesis 46:29,30)
It is obvious from this passage that Joseph had a great love and respect for his father. Joseph had risen to a position of great prominence in Egypt. Jacob, on the other hand, was a wandering shepherd. The Egyptians had little use for shepherds. Yet, Joseph was not embarrassed by this. He honored his father as God later commanded children to do (Exodus 20:12).
Joseph showed his father how much he loved him. He was not afraid to reveal his emotions. Joseph fell on his father’s neck and “wept on his neck a good while.” Joseph was a tender man whom circumstances had not hardened.
Showing love to our spouses, parents, children and grandchildren is so important. I had a great respect for my father. I loved him so much that I never wanted to disappoint him. He died when I was twenty years old. Since that time I have always had father figures in my life whom I have loved and respected.
As a husband, I want to love my wife as Christ loved the church — unconditionally, sacrificially and unending. I want to demonstrate to her how much I love her and how thankful I am for her.
As a father and grandfather, I realize how important it is for me to show my children and grandchildren how much I love them. I cherish every minute I have with them and often tell them how much I love them and how thankful I am for them.
The reunion with Joseph brought great joy to Jacob. Jacob had experienced a great deal of pain in his life. Perhaps the greatest was when he lost his beloved wife Rachel when she gave birth to Benjamin. Then he experienced tremendous grief when Joseph was lost (37:34,35). He also had a great fear of losing Benjamin (42:38). But now the two sons of his beloved Rachel were together with their father again.
Children, older and younger, you have no idea what great joy you can bring to your parents. The greatest joy any parent can experience is seeing his or her children growing and prospering spiritually. I’m sure Jacob was proud of Joseph’s successful career. But I imagine that he was far more grateful for Joseph’s spiritual faithfulness and godly character.
I have seen my children grow spiritually. Some of their growth came through painful circumstances. I am so grateful that they are walking with Christ faithfully and bringing up their children to do the same. What a joy it is for me to see my grandchildren grasping the things of God. One of my greatest prayers is that my grandchildren will be spiritually faithful to the Savior and will grow to be men and women of godly character.
Lord Jesus, I thank You for my family. I thank You for my wife Enable me to love her as Christ loves His church. I thank You for my children who are walking with You. Continue to let them grow in their faith all the days of their lives. Give them wisdom as they seek to provide spiritual nourishment for their children. And bless my grandchildren. Work in their lives mightily, grab their hearts, and make them faithful servants of Yours.
