THE FATHER OF GLORY

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:15-23

“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:17-19a)

Paul addresses this prayer to “the Father of glory.” After acknowledging all the spiritual blessings in Christ that are ours (vs. 3-14), we can readily understand this title. The Father of glory elects and redeems His people and promises them an inheritance that is sealed by the Holy Spirit. We are destined for glory. Surely, He is the Father of glory!

Paul prays that this glorious Father will give us a spirit of wisdom and a deeper understanding of who He is. Simply put, he is asking God to give him us a deeper penetration into the meaning of the gospel and a clearer insight into the will of God for our lives. Paul’s prayer is that we might know more and more about our glorious Lord. We can never fully grasp the immenseness of His grace and love for us.

He specifically prays that the eyes of our hearts may be enlightened. The heart refers to the core of our being, the essence of who we are. This heart enlightening includes that we we know the hope of God’s calling, which includes a fervent yearning, confident expectation, and patient waiting for the fulfillment of God’s promises. He also prays that the eyes of our hearts will be enlightened to the riches of the glorious inheritance that is ours in Christ. This includes all the spiritual blessings we have now and those yet to come. Then Paul prays that we may know the immeasurable greatness of God’s power to us who believe. His power is immeasurable for He is omnipotent.

It is impossible to grasp fully the hope of God’s calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance, and the immeasurable greatness of His power to us. However, as we reflect upon these things and pray that God will enlighten our hearts to them, we will get a grater understanding of them. We will get to know our God better. The more we know Him, the more we will love and appreciate all that He is and all that He has done for us.

Father of glory, I pray that You give me a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Your will. I pray that You will enlighten the eyes of my heart so that I may know the hope to which You have called me, the riches of Your glorious inheritance in the saints, and the immeasurable greatness of Your power toward me. I want to know You in more and more. Thank You for who You are and for all that You have done for me.
