Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:15-23
“And what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 1:19,20)
Paul was praying for the eyes of our hearts to be enlightened to the hope to which we have been called, to the riches of God’s glorious inheritance in the saints, and to the immeasurable greatness of God’s power (vs. 17,18). He then demonstrates how great God’s power is — “when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.” God has at His disposal as great a power as He exhibited when He raised Christ from the dead. God is all powerful. Nothing is impossible for Him (Luke 1:37).
God raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places — “far above rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come” (v. 21). The power of the living God in Christ supersedes all other power structures in heaven and on earth. He rules over all competing authorities — “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in Him” (Colossians 2:15). God has placed all things under Christ’s feet (v. 22a). Remember Jesus’ words before He ascended into heaven — “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (Matthew 28:17b).
Jesus Christ is “head over all things to the church” (v. 22b). The concept is like a modern day head of state. He is the final authority in the Church. There is no human head of the Church. However Christ ordained elders to shepherd and govern His Church. They serve under His authority.
When we consider the great power of God, we are comforted. King Jesus rules and reigns. He is “above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come” (v. 21b). We have nothing to fear, for our all powerful Savior and King is with us. He is omnipotent and nothing is impossible for Him.
Lord Jesus, what comfort it gives me to know that You are all powerful and that You are in control of all things. Indeed, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to You. You are head over all things. I know that You are with me to strengthen me and to protect me. I have nothing to fear.
