MADE ALIVE IN CHRIST

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:4-7

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4,5)

At one time we were spiritually dead. We were hopeless and helpless until God acted — “But God!” Because He is rich in mercy and because He loves us with an unconditional and sacrificial love, God made us alive together with Christ. Jesus Christ made it possible. He took upon Himself our nature and sins. He bore the punishment that is rightly ours. The wrath of God was poured out upon Him. This is the meaning of His death on the cross. Sin was being punished. God’s wrath was directed toward our substitute Jesus Christ. He redeemed us by His precious blood.

Because of the work of Christ, we have come to the end of our spiritual death. We have been made alive by the glorious power of God. God performed a powerful work in us, which gave us a new ability, a new outlook, and a new power. We once were blind but now we see!

The term “made alive” refers to our regeneration. Regeneration is an act of God by which a principle of new life is implanted in a spiritually dead sinner and a new disposition is given to him or her. It is a creative act of God — “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come” (II Corinthians 5:17). God caused us to be born again — “According to HIs great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (I Peter 1:3). Jesus said to Nicodemus — “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3). “Born again” is another term for “made alive” and “regeneration.”

We are made alive solely by the grace of God — “by grace you have been saved.” While we were underserving and unworthy, God saved us by His grace. Grace is God’s unmerited favor bestowed on those who have positive demerit. The positive demerit is the sinful nature and particular sins of human beings. God made us alive in spite of the positive demerit that was on our record.

Rest in His grace. Be thankful for the fact that God acted in us and made us alive together with Christ. Now we have the ability to understand the things of God and to live our lives to His glory. We are no longer dead spiritually; we have been made alive together with Christ!

Lord God, thank You for the powerful and creative work You did in my life when You made me alive together with Christ. I know how undeserving and unworthy I am. Yet, You initiated Your work of grace in my by causing me to be born again. Forgive me when I fail to recognize how amazing Your grace truly is.
