THE CHRISTIAN’S WALK

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:1-3

“I, therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.” (Ephesians 4:1,2)

The Christian life is often described in terms of a walk. Paul is telling us that we are to walk (live) in a manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called. Think about our calling. God is the One who calls us. He has extended His grace and love toward us and made us His sons and daughters. Therefore, we are to live out our lives according to His call. We are to honor God by the way we live and we are to glorify Him in all that we do.

This also means that we are to treat others the way God has treated us. Paul describes how we are to treat one another — “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.” Isn’t this the way that God has treated us? He is gentle and patient with us. He bears with us even when we disappoint Him. God desires for us to treat others like He treats us.

We have the ability to walk in the manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called because we have Christ living in us — “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). We have Christ living in us. When we yield our lives to Him, we can love others with His love. We can be gracious and patience with people because He gives us the power to do so. And we can bear with one another in love.

I know from experience that I cannot do these things in my own strength. By faith, I must yield my will to the will of Jesus. I must draw off His power and trust Him to enable me to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which I have been called.

Lord Jesus, I need Your strength to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which I have been called. Enable me to be humble and to treat others with gentleness and patience. Grant me power to bear with others (especially the difficult people in my life) in love. Thank You that you have been gentle and patient with me. You never give up on me. You bear with me in love.
