Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:15,16
“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” (Ephesians 4:15,16)
The Bible often uses the metaphor of a body to describe the Church of our Lord Jesus. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Body. He leads, directs and guides His Body. He hold every aspect of the Body together. The Body is totally dependent upon the head. Jesus is the unifying force that connects each part of the Body together.
Every member of the Church has a significant role in the Body of Christ. The Church’s leaders are to equip each member of the Body for ministry (Ephesians 4:11,12). When equipped for service, each member enables the Body to work properly. As we have seen Christ gives gifts, abilities, and talents that are to be used in the Church’s ministry for the building up of the Church.
When the Body is working properly, it builds itself up in love. There is no maturity or effective ministry without love. When the members of the Church are working together in love toward the mission of the Church, the Church will grow spiritually and numerically.
Unfortunately there are many churches today that are being ineffective in their witness and ministry. There are divisions and conflicts that come from a lack of love. This is why speaking the truth in love is so important. Conflicts need to be resolved. Reconciliation between individuals is critically important. When a church is unhealthy, it will not grow and it will not be effective in ministry.
Each of us needs to be a responsible member of the Body of Christ. We are to get our directions from the Head, Jesus Christ. We are to use our gifts and abilities to build up the Body. We are to speak the truth in love. The world desperately needs the gospel. Healthy churches are essential in order to be effective in accomplishing Christ’s mission — to make disciples of all nations.
Lord Jesus, Head of Your Church, thank You for bringing me into Your Body. I pray that I will grow up in every way in You. I pray that I will use my gifts and abilities to grow Your Church. I pray that our church members will work together in love to build up Your Body.
