FAITHFUL EMPLOYERS

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:5-9

“Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that He who is both their master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality in Him.” (Ephesians 6:9)

Those who are in positions of leadership must understand the value of human beings. They are to remember that their employees are made in the image of God. They are valuable to God and they must be valuable to those who lead them.

Employers are to show genuine concern for their employees’ welfare. Consider these two passages. First — “For the Scripture says ‘You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing, and the laborer is worthy of his wages.'” (I Timothy 5:18). God insists on fair wages. When we fail to pay appropriate wages, we cheat God. Employers are to provide adequate resources so that their employees can perform their duties — “You shall not muzzle the ox while he is threshing.”

Second — “And just as you want men to treat you, treat them in the same way” (Luke 6:31). Here is a basic principle of management — treat employees the way you want to be treated — fairly, honestly, and with consideration. Ephesians 6:9 says, “Do the same to them.” Employers are to render service to their employees “with good will to the Lord and not to man.”

Employers are to take a positive approach to management — “Stop your threatening.” Rather than threatening employees, managers are to encourage their employees to be the best they can be. Employers are to reward their employees and are to pay them fair wages.

Those in positions of leadership will be held accountable for the way they treat their employees — “Knowing that He who is both their master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality in Him.”

Lord God, I know that I am responsible to You for the way I treat those whom I lead. Give me patience, strength, and self-control as I deal with our staff members. Let me encourage them and treat them the way I want to be treated. Enable me to see them in the same way that You see them — valuable and honored because they are made in Your image.
