Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:10-20

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:13)

We have seen the fierce battle that we are involved in every day. We must be prepared for the attacks and schemes of Satan. God has given us what we need for the battle — the armor of God. The armor of God is the spiritual armor that is needed to fight spiritual battles — “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds” (II Corinthians 10:4).

“Take up the whole armor of God!” There is an urgency to the command. It is clear and curt. Do not allow the enemy to find you defenseless. Take up your armor! Do it at once!

The reason is given — “that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.” Paul is speaking about times of great temptations and trials, the critical moments in your life when the devil will attack you most vehemently. We do not know when the attacks will come, but we can be certain that they will. Therefore, we must always be ready.

“Having done all, to stand firm.” Resisting the devil, standing firm against him, has this comforting result — “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

Let’s look at the armor God has provided. First is the “BELT OF TRUTH.” Jesus is the truth. His truth will set us free. We are to know the truth and to live by it. When we know the truth, we will be able to detect Satan’s schemes and lies.

Second is the ‘BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.” All our righteousness comes from Christ. When we are justified, we are made righteous as the righteousness of Christ is imputed to us. We must bring the righteousness of Christ directly against all of Satan’s schemes against us. He will constantly accuse us and cause us to doubt that our sins are forgiven and that we have been made righteous. However, Christ’s righteousness will always prevail.

Third are the ‘SANDALS OF PEACE.” Our feet stand on the solid rick of the peace of God. The God of peace is always with us. Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is our King and Savior. His peace has been given to us and Satan cannot stand against it.

Fourth is the “SHIELD OF FAITH.” God Himself is our shield and defender. By faith we can count on Him to shield us and to extinguish all the flaming darts of Satan. The Lord is our complete and perfect shield, and Satan cannot touch us.

We will continue looking at the armor of God in the next post.

Lord God, thank You for providing the spiritual armor that I need for the battles I will face today. Let me put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals of peace, and the shield of faith. Enable me to detect Satan’s schemes against me. Let me resist him with all my might. I cannot fight these battles without You. You are my shield and defender.
