THE ARMOR OF GOD (Part 2)

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:10-20

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:13)

We are looking at the armor God has provided for the spiritual battles we will face. We are involved in fierce warfare. We must be prepared for the battles that we will face each day. So far we have addressed the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals of peace, and the shield of faith.

The fifth piece of armor is the helmet of salvation. We must cover our minds and thoughts with the salvation God has graciously given us. We must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. We are to let the mind of Christ be our mind. The salvation accomplished by our Lord has already defeated Satan. We must rest in the gift of this salvation.

The sixth piece of armor is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. We must choose to believe God’s Word and to live our lives by it. God’s Word is the offensive weapon we have to defeat Satan. When Jesus was being tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He quoted Scripture and Satan fled.

As we consider the spiritual warfare we experience each day, ponder these questions:

Am I really convinced that I am involved in a fierce spiritual warfare?

Am I trusting the Lord Jesus to fight the battles with me and for me?

Am I prepared to fight?

Am I able to defend myself against Satan’s attacks?

Let’s remember these things about our warfare with Satan. First, Jesus disarmed Satan and his demons and put them to open shame — “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in Him” (Colossians 2:15). Second, Satan’s doom is sure — “And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented forever and ever” (Revelation 20:9).

Martin Luther summed up Satan’s doom in his hymn “A Mighty Fortress” — “And though this world with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his dome is sure; one little word shall fell him.”

Lord God, thank You for providing me with the armor I need to fight the spiritual battles I will face today. In faith I place each piece of this armor on in preparation for the temptations, attacks, and schemes of the evil one. Lord Jesus, I know that You have already conquered Satan. Indeed, his doom is sure!
