Scripture Reading: Psalm 4:1-8
“Many are asking, ‘Who can show us good?’ Let the light of Your face shine upon us, O Lord. You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wind abound. I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:6-8)
The Psalmist reminds us that the Lord is the ultimate source of joy and peace. Joy and peace do not come from happy circumstances or material possessions; they are gifts from God. They are fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23).
David had been in distress — “Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer” (v. 1). David was facing opposition and he was deeply troubled. He knew what he needed to do. He had to shift his focus from his problem to his sovereign Lord.
Many of David’s people were distraught also — “Who can show us good?” David knew the answer — “Let the light of Your face shine upon us, O Lord.” God alone can bring us perfect joy and peace. When the light of His face shines upon us, we are brought into His glorious presence. When we spend time in prayer, Scripture reading and medication, we can experience the light of God’s face shining upon us. It is then that our hearts are filled with joy and we can lie down and sleep in peace, for we know that it is the Lord alone who can make us dwell in safety. “Know that the Lord has set apart the godly for Himself; the Lord will hear when I call to Him” (v. 3).
Lord, I long for my heart to be filled with Your joy and peace. I confess that I allow problems, worries, and fears to dominate my thoughts. I call upon You, O Lord, let the light of Your face shine upon me. Fill my heart with Your joy and let me experience Your perfect peace.
